TORONTO, Ont. — Cobble Beach Classics is showcasing a stunning array of vintage automobiles in a tribute to performance at the 2024 Canadian International AutoShow.
The fan-favourite annual exhibit will immerse AutoShow patrons in the rich history and performance heritage of select vehicles at the exhibit presented by Cobble Beach Concours d’Elegance – renowned for its commitment to presenting exceptional collections. Guests will be able to experience a comprehensive journey through some of the top performance vehicles in the history of the automobile. The exhibit will include:
- 1929 Bentley Speed Six Sport Tourer — One of the world’s finest automobiles is the British-built Bentley of the 1920s, considered by many to be the original sports car. First introduced to the public in 1921, this was the start of Bentley Motors’ quickly rising reputation for outstanding quality, elegance and rapid acceleration.
- 1931 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Grand Sport — A sports car gem with a body built by Zagato, it is popular for its lightness, balance, quickness and responsiveness. Renowned for its racing prowess, this car secured more than 20 international racing titles during its three-year production run.
- The 1932 Stutz Super Bearcat — A rare find, with fewer than 10 existing models of Stutz Super Bearcat known to exist in present day. A classic of the era, it was designed to stand out as the ideal evolution from its original sporty nature to a luxury car. The Super Bearcat is a true factory built “Hot-Rod” of the era.
- 1932 Marmon Sixteen Convertible Coupe — Only 44 Marmon Sixteen Convertible Coupes were originally built, and only eight remain. Showcasing the elegance and power of a bygone era, it boasts a 200-horsepower 16-cylinder engine and aluminum block, with an aluminum body over wood made by LeBaron.
- 1936 Peugeot 402 Darl’mat Special Sports Roadster — Designed to be a sporting car, able to be raced reliably, the well-tuned Peugeot four cylinder paced the Special Sport Roadster to place first in its class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1938. Emile Darl’mat would produce just 53 examples of the Special Sport Roadster, with only around 30 examples surviving today. The elegant coachwork of the roadster offers a gorgeous glimpse of the French Art Deco automotive style.
- 1957 Ferrari 250 LWB Tour de France — These competition cars were constructed in Superleggera form by Scaglietti. This car was crashed during testing at the 1957 Nurburgring 1000km race, and then again during practice for the 1957 Tour de France — but was hastily repaired and ran to a second-place finish. It then finished eighth in the Buenos Aires 1000 km before being imported to the U.S. In 1971 it was restored to the same livery it bore in its 1957 Tour de France race.
- 1966 Shelby 427 Cobra — One of only 260 street cars produced — and only 100 delivered with dual carburetors — this Cobra is one of the very few 427s that has a totally unblemished history and was never modified with competition features. The car has only been driven 14,000 miles from new and still retains its near perfect original seats, all of its original glass and original unmodified chassis, body, engine, transmission, rear end and chassis tag. In 2023, Legendary Motorcar Company completed a ground up concours restoration. This 427 Cobra is undoubtedly one of the very best in existence.
- 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500KR Convertible — The arrival of the beefed-up Shelby Mustang and its many versions only made things better, but Ford and Carroll Shelby felt the pony could become even more impressive. Their dream came true in April 1968, when a brand-new version of the 428 Police Interceptor engine was fitted with improved-breathing heads and larger exhaust manifolds, giving birth to the 428 Cobra Jet. The mill quickly found its way into the Shelby GT500 which became the GT500 KR “King of the Road.” Officially rated at 335 horsepower but powered by no less than 400 ponies with 440 pound-feet of torque, the King gained iconic status almost immediately.
- 1971 Pontiac Pegasus Concept — The second-generation Pontiac Firebird brought European style to the brand that introduced the concept of American Muscle to the world — inspiration that was taken a step further with the Pontiac Pegasus, a design study that began its life as a production 1970½ GM designers executed a Ferrari-inspired look that borrowed its long-nosed front end and grille from the 1958 250 Testa Rossa race car, and Enzo Ferrari contributed a 4.4-liter 365 GTB/4 V12 engine to the project that was mated to a Ferrari 5-speed transmission and a GM posi-traction rear axle. It also featured an exhaust system, mufflers and instrumentation from Ferrari as well as Corvette 4-wheel disc brakes and Borrani wire wheels.
- 1980 Lamborghini Countach LP400S “Lowbody” — Once described as the “ultimate supercar” and “an adrenalin-inducing motorized dart” by Motorsport Magazine, the Countach is capable to topping 100 mph in under 12 seconds, with a top speed of 180 mph. This particular Lowbody Countach, having never been apart, is a true time capsule, and an exemplary piece of groundbreaking and historically significant mobile art.
The Cobble Beach Classics Tribute to Performance exhibit will have a new home at the 2024 Canadian International AutoShow, showcased in the 100 level of the North Building of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre alongside the Auto Exotica luxury boutique.
