TORONTO, Ont. — There are cars for getting the family around, and there are those best suited for a quick commute to and from work.
But others are pure adrenaline; a rush to drive with quick acceleration, tight handling and design that is striking. On one extreme of this segment are hypercars and supercars — and while these are the ultimate definition of a performance car, the reality is they are beyond the reach of the average person. However, there are several cars at the 2024 Canadian International AutoShow built with performance in mind, but at a much more reasonable price point.
A blend of muscle, sleek design and straight up power can be found throughout the manufacturer exhibits at the AutoShow:
- Toyota — With a showcase of its GR series, Toyota is offering the GR86, an authentic 2+2 rear-wheel drive sports car with a 2.4L Flat-4 with D-4S engine driving 228 horsepower, the GR Supra and the GR Corolla.
- Subaru — Called the “uncommon everyday sports car,” the WRX RS made its Canadian debut at the AutoShow this year, offering enhanced performance and handling capability, thanks to a high-performance Brembo braking system and RS-tuned suspension. The BRZ has an iconic sportscar design — muscular, purposeful and aerodynamic — and is engineered for driving fun with a low centre of gravity, near perfect weight distribution and a driver-focused cabin that is infused with technology.
- Porsche — The entire Porsche room could be defined as performance, including the all-new Taycan Turbo S touted as the most powerful and quickest Porsche ever.
- Nissan Z Nismo — With a 420-horsepower twin turbo V6 and aerodynamics inspired by the GT500 racecar, the Z Nismo is bred for competition.
- Maserati — The Gran Turismo Modena is packed with a 3.0L twin turbocharged V6 engine, delivering 483 horsepower and hitting 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds. It boasts a top speed of 302 km/h.
- Lexus —As Lexus says, the RC F was born and bred for the track, with a 472 horsepower V8 engine, cockpit seating and launch control to get the most out of every start. The LC has a naturally aspirated 5.0L V8 in a car touted as the perfect cross between luxury and sports. The IS pushes the limits of dynamic performance in a luxury sedan, with the F Sport model delivering 472 horsepower.
- Kia EV6 GT — A performance electric vehicle, the EV6 GT is Kia’s most powerful production car ever, generating 576 horsepower and rocketing to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds with a top speed of 260 km/h.
- INFINITI — Luxury meets power in the Q50, which comes with a standard 3.0L engine generating up to 400 horsepower.
- Hyundai Elantra N — The Elantra N Line is a high-performance sedan with a racing heritage. It’s driven by a 1.6 Turbo GDI engine generating 204 horsepower. The IONIQ 5 N is the everyday sportscar and the most powerful Hyundai N ever, hitting 100km/h in 3.4 seconds.
- Genesis —The newly enhanced G70 sport sedan is refined for the 2024 model year as a luxury sports sedan with interior updates and new standard performance features to deliver a superior driving experience.
- Ford — The all-new 2024 Mustang Dark Horse is powered by a naturally aspirated Gen-4 5.0L Coyote V8 engine that kicks out 500 horsepower and 418 lb.-ft, of torque for a visceral driving experience. Ford is displaying a range of their Mustang family, including the Mach-E GT and Mach-E Rally delivering electrified performance.
- Cadillac — The V-Series Blackwing brings exhilarating power to a sedan. The all-new CT5-V Blackwing has a 6.2 supercharged V8 engine delivering 668 horsepower, and hitting 100 km/h in less than four seconds. The CT4-V Blackwing has a 3.6L Cadillac-exclusive twin turbocharged V6 pushing 472 horsepower, and is available with a manual six-speed transmission.
- Chevrolet Corvette — The pinnacle of precision, the Corvette Z06 places a hand-built LT6 5.5L V8 racing engine in the car, purpose built to dominate the track. It pushes 670 horsepower and hits 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds. The Corvette Stingray boasts 495 horsepower to complete a quarter mile in just 11.2 seconds. The Corvette E-Ray will complete a quarter mile in 10.5 seconds on a combined 655 horsepower from its LT2 V8 engine and electric drive unit.
- Alfa Romeo — The Giulia Quadrifoglio, billed as the ultimate sports sedan, has graceful lines and best-in-class 505 horsepower, 443 pounds of torque and top track speed of 307 km/h, powered by a 2.9L Twin Turbo V6.
